About Me

I’ve always loved creative writing, from the moment I could comprehend what it was in the first place. Whether it was writing about a thing that happened to me in the moment, or a complex mystery novel that I never finished. I’ve never been ashamed to admit that fact, and to this day, I still keep a journal locked in the front drawer of my room, documenting the silliest things of the week.

Focusing on pure journalism itself, my friends tell me I spend too much time in A111, the center of journalism at Monta Vista High School, but I say there’s no such thing as too much time dedicated towards your passion. And honestly there’s a lot I can say about El Estoque. That it’s my home, my safe haven and my one true love. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned in this publication, it’s to go bold or go home.

Now I know that the actual saying is “go big” but with all due respect, I believe to “go bold” is the proper term. Because to go bold is to step out of your comfort zone, and to embrace the things that scared you before, which is exactly what journalism is.

It’s recording an interview with a source about a story that’s bigger then yourself. It’s arguing loudly alongside your fellow peers if you really should use a fancy font, or stick to the original. It’s asking a random source off the street for an interview, and getting rejected. It’s laughing alongside your peers at that one tiny mistake in the magazine, when all you really want to do is bang your head against the wall. It’s starting your way from a staff writer, to a Public Relations editor, to a Features editor, to your final stop, a Copy Editor.

And most importantly, it’s a lifestyle.

So as I sit here typing, and talking to you fellow readers, I hope you enjoy this immerse experience into the journalism as I did. And as you browse through the endless stories, maybe you’ll get a flash of inspiration to write a story yourself, or join your publication.

As they say, go “bold” or go home.

With luck,

Emma Lam
